Microsoft will no longer support the Windows 7 Operating System (OS) beginning January 2020.

Security patches will not be generated to protect against vulnerabilities. To maintain a safe computing environment at WPI, Information Technology (IT) is proactively transitioning devices to Windows 10.

Action Needed

Windows 7 computers must be backed up and upgraded to Windows 10.

IT has been working to upgrade computers for the past several months. We recently sent an additional notification to users of computers that appear to be running Windows 7 with instructions to self-upgrade at your convenience.

We recognize that upgrading to a new operating system is a big change, but we’d like to reassure you that the Windows 7 functionality has carried over into Windows 10. While you may notice differences in appearance, you also gain many benefits.

Beginning November 18, you can upgrade to Windows 10 using Software Center. As with any OS upgrade, this will completely reimage your computer. Please take the following actions:

  1. Back up your computer
  2. Upgrade to Windows 10

Instructions and additional information for these steps can be found in Actions. If you would like assistance, IT would be happy to work with you to ensure all data is backed up and the transition to the new OS is as simple as possible!
