In order to maintain security of WPI's systems, the University employs the follows practices for those who no longer work at WPI:

  • Emeritus Faculty, Emeritus Staff, or Retired Faculty

    Practice

    Keep an active network account, with full access to their email address and mailbox, as well as all other systems.

    Timeline

    Disabled after 1 Year Inactivity

    Accounts that have been dormant for 1 year will be disabled.

    Deleted after 2 Years Inactivity

    Accounts that have been dormant for 2 years will be deleted altogether.

  • Retired Staff

    Practice

    Keep email address, but mailbox will be wiped clean on the last day of employment. No other network or system access.

    Timeline

    Disabled after 1 Year Inactivity

    Accounts that have been dormant for 1 year will be disabled.

    Deleted after 2 Years Inactivity

    Accounts that have been dormant for 2 years will be deleted altogether.

  • Terminated Faculty/Staff

    Practice

    If forwarding is requesting for business continuity, keep active for 3 months. All email and system access will be terminated immediately.

    Timeline

    Disabled Immediately

    Accounts are disabled immediately upon termination.

    Deleted after 1 Year

    Accounts will be deleted 1 year after employee termination.

  • Terminated Faculty/Staff that are also alumni

    Practice

    Former faculty/staff will receive a new alumni email address in the @wpi.edu domain when they leave WPI. The old email address will be terminated or forwarded for business continuity. 

    Timeline

    Disabled Immediately

    Employee account is disabled immediately upon termination.

    Deleted after 1 Year

    Employee account will be deleted 1 year after termination.

    New Email Account Active 
    These will not impact the new alumni email account created upon termination.
