WPI Information Technology (IT) regularly deploys the latest Microsoft Security and Critical patches on WPI-owned computers. These updates are made to maintain the security and functionality of WPI-owned computers. IT is the responsibility of owners to update personally-owned devices connecting to the WPI network. Patching these vulnerabilities on IT-managed and personal devices is critical to preventing the machines from being hacked, and keeping WPI's resources secure.
Windows: Action Needed
For individuals working remotely:
The computer must be connected to the WPI network (via the VPN or RAP) and powered on to receive the patches overnight.
Please note: While the updates will become available during the maintenance hours listed, they may not complete during this time. Depending upon your connection; downloads could span a longer time until they are complete.
For IT-managed WPI-Owned Computers on campus:
These computers should remain powered on to receive updates.
IT recommends that everyone prepare for the updates as follows:
- Save all your work and close all programs.
- Leave the computer powered on and connected to the WPI Network.
Please anticipate that computers will restart after the update is complete.
For computers not managed by IT, including personal devices:
Please ensure that you perform the latest operating system updates.
Note: CAM Agent is Cherwell Asset Management, used by IT for service/asset management and ticketing.
Dell Updates
IT has enabled Dell Command Update (DCU) for IT-managed Dell computers. DCU can be installed from Software Center. Monthly updates will be deployed via DCU, which simplifies the BIOS, firmware, driver, and application update experience. Updates may also contain feature enhancements or changes that improve the reliability and availability the computer. DCU may display notifications. Installing the updates recommended in the notification keeps Windows running properly and resolves security issues.
