Dr. Aleise McGowan spent 21 years in working in industry before going into academia.

After earning her bachelor's degree in 2001, she started her career as a network administrator. Her last industry job was as the Director of Technology in a K-12 school district. One challenge of that position was she had to both write policies and implement them.

Her passion for learning is what led her back to school to get her master's degree in Management Information Systems and a PhD in computer science.

She is currently an Assistant Professor of Cybersecurity/ Information Technology at The University of Southern Mississippi and a co-principal investigator for the Mapping Freedom Research Project. She is also the Chief Information Security Officer for BlackGirlsHack.
